Soar with the Eagles
Where: Lake Coeur d’Alene (Coeur d’Alene, ID)
When: Every year from the end of November through January (peak time seems to be mid to late December)
A local photographer urged us to not miss the annual eagle migration to Lake Coeur d’Alene. I’m so glad he told us about it! It was definitely a highlight of our year. Every winter hundreds of bald eagles migrate to the Coeur d’Alene, ID and Sandpoint, ID areas to feed on spawning kokanee salmon. It has become a popular wildlife-viewing attraction.
We recommend the Higgens Point, Beauty Bay and Wolf Lodge Bay areas of Lake Coeur d’Alene as the best places we have found to see the eagles. We had great photo opportunities from the shore but you also can take an eagle-watching boat cruise with Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises. It seems one would get the best photo opportunities from a kayak in these bays. We hope to do that next year! I’m told the eagles can also be seen on Lake Pend Oreille though we have not gone there to see them.
More info on the eagles in Coeur d’Alene can be found on the Visit North Idaho and Idaho Fish and Game websites.
